Giraud et al. propose an improvement of SLIC [1] superpixels called SCALP – superpixels with contour adherence using linear path. In particular, they adapt the distance metric used for computing SLIC superpixels. In addition to an Euclidean distance in color and spatial space, they define a color and contour sensity distance along the straight path between pixel and superpixel centroid, as illustrated in Figure 1. Qualitative results are shown in Figure 2. The improvement over SLIC is – in my opinion – not significant.
