Mission Statements From My PhD Applications

In the last few months I applied to two different PhD programs offered by the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen. In this article, I want to share the mission statements required for the applications.

Over the last few months, I applied to two PhD programs offered by the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen (Germany). Specifically, the Max Planck ETH Center for Learning Systems (CLS), a cooperation between the Max Planck Institute and ETH Zürich, and the newly founded International Max Planck Research School for Intelligent Systems (IMPRS). I spent a considerable amount of time on these applications and in this article I want to share the corresponding mission statements.

I found it particular difficult to come up with a good structure for the mission statements and convey my (very rough) research interests effectively. The latter, for example, was especially challenging for me as the first application was due before starting my master thesis. Only in the course of the master thesis I was able to narrow down my research interests. I can imagine that some real mission statements from other students would have helped me in this process. Therefore, I decided to share my mission statements in this article.

The mission statements can be downloaded below:
